A LETTER FROM THE SUPERVISOR
Recently there have been a lot of rumors coming from Lansing regarding abolishing and/or consolidating townships, based on population. The townships seem to be taking a lot of the blame for the State of Michigan not being able to make ends meet. The townships in this state seem to balance their budgets every year. There are some legislators that think the government should run only through the county, thus making townships expendable. I personally couldn't disagree more. I haven't seen any studies indicating that the county could perform services to the residents of this county at a lesser cost than the townships already do. As a resident, I appreciate the fact that I have a township hall to go to when I need to speak to my elected officials regarding concerns, likes or dislikes I may have. The township hall is where I go to cast my vote for all elections. During tax season, I pay my taxes there and I am able to discuss any tax issues with my Township Treasurer. If I desire to protest my tax assessment, I would be more comfortable going before a Township Board of Review rather than a County Board of Review. I prefer discussing my concerns with the people who reside in the same township as I do and can relate to any issue I may have. With all of the cutbacks in the police departments statewide, I feel fortunate that my township has it own police department. I can feel secure when on vacation knowing that the police department is watching my property. Just having the police presence in the township helps to make it a safer place to live. What would happen if the townships were abolished? What would happen to these services? I don't want to find out. If you agree with any or all of my concerns please take the time to call, write a personal letter or e-mail to our Lapeer County State Representative, Senators, Congressmen and women and the Governor.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and please make an effort to contact anyone of the above mentioned officials.
